Reflection

1. Module Learning :

At the start of this module, I had doubts in the learning outcome as I believed that I am able to communicate well with others. I realise that there is so much more to just communicating. Through communicating, I am able to reflect and learn more from the other party. Effective communication includes being able to make an impact on others verbally and motivate them to carry out certain actions. Communication skills are also crucial for building social relationships. When people communicate effectively, they are able to understand one another and work together towards a common goal. With the help of Mdm Faz, she shared about her personal experiences as well as delivering the lecture in a comprehensive manner. Us as engineers, being able to deliver technical terms well to the general public requires us to relate to our audiences. Understanding our audiences would give us a rough idea on how the presentation should be carried out. For example, presenting to an audience with a persuasive speech versus an informative speech requires a different approach. In an informative speech, your goal is to inform your audience on a particular topic. A persuasive speech is meant to persuade the audience to carry out a specific action or persuade them to adopt the speaker's belief or opinion. Being able to differentiate the purpose of your presentation will set the tone of the mood and allow the audience to be engaged.

2. Project Learning :

While preparing for our presentation, I had to mingle with people of other groups as well as my own. It was difficult stepping out of my comfort zone to interact with others but with the common topic being the module effective communication, we were able to find a common ground. During the first few weeks of class, we were grouped into different groups and we had to share our readings into a google document. I felt that this way of learning allowed me to better understand my classmates and how they approached the given task. During the sharing portion, we were tasked to share our findings with the class. This gave me a glimpse of how well-spoken my classmates were and I managed to learn some tips. With every presentation, it is important to engage eye contact, good body posture and many more. However, being able to present well with fluent literacy is also one of the many main factors to give a good presentation. My group mates gave individual feedback. We listed down each of our weaknesses and advised on how we could do better as a team. My weakness was the lack of eye contact and moderation of tone. Hilda advised me to speak without a script as I could maximise my eye contact. After much practising, I managed to link the images on the slides to my points for better visualisation. The hook of our presentation managed to capture the audience which gave us the confidence to share our discussed ideas. Overall, there are many ways to improve as this is our first presentation together as a group. With the help of Mdm Faz’s feedback, our group was informed on how we can better improve.

To summarise, this module helped me gain better confidence in my presentation as well as writing skills. Working with my team has helped me understand that every individual will always have something to offer and we can all learn from each other to better improve ourselves. Interpersonal skills are also essential when working in a team. Despite the need to be able to express my ideas, I must actively listen to the views of others. This will help my classmates feel respected and valued.
